Pupils dressed as pirates for the journey which took them from Tanja to Bega via Dr George Mountain on forestry tracks and public roads.
Once this tired band of seafarers made dry land in Bega’s Littleton Gardens they were exhausted but happy, very keen to remove shoes and the odd wooden leg.
The walk is now in its 23rd year, with the whole cohort from Kindergarten to Year 6 taking part in this fundraiser for Oxfam.
“It was 23km in the 23rd year this year so that was a bit special,” principal/pirate captain Rick McFetters said.
“We had 16 children complete the journey with help from six parents and three school staff.”
The group was also accompanied by two pirate pooches in skull and crossbones bandanas, Panda and Billie.
Mr McFetters thanked the community for their support, including people who sponsored the children and those who dropped a few gold doubloons in their Oxfam collection buckets on the walk.
“We look to again have reached our target of $1000,” he said.
Mr McFetters said he was extremely proud of this scurvy group of pirates.
“You’ve all done the school and myself proud again today, and I hope you have a good holiday where I’m sure your feet will recover from today,” he told the pirate pupils.
“My feet are a bit older, so perhaps I should take an extra week or two off.”
However, that suggestion was shouted down by the Tanja pirates so Captain McFetters and his merry band will be in school uniform and back on deck on October 7.
