It was tears and laughter at Bega’s Australia Post office on Friday as long-time employee Roslyn Kirby bid farewell to colleagues and customers.
Ms Kirby is retiring after 18 years at the Bega branch were she is popular with co-workers and those who drop in daily to pick up their mail.
“I love being here, I love everyone at the counter I work with, all the guys out the back and all the customers I’ve come to know over the years,” she said.
“It’s really been a great place to work but at the same time I am looking forward to retirement.
“I want to do some volunteering and some travel, and I’ve also got 12acres to keep me busy.
Ms Kirby was handing out chocolate hearts to customers on Friday to show how much she would miss them and the consensus among those waiting in the post office is that they would definitely miss her.
Co-worker Georgina D'Souza said she was not looking forward to Monday.
“I really will miss Ros so much, it won’t be the same to come in on Monday morning and she’s not here.
“I’ve been here 13 years and it’s been a pleasure to work with her,” she said with tears in her eyes.
Although she was retiring this week, Ms Kirby is still working for the post office one way.
“I still have to organise the Christmas party,” she said with a laugh.
“I’ve been doing it every year and I am the organised one so I’ll do it one last time, although they will have to sort themselves out next year!”
Ms Kirby will still pick her mail up at the Bega branch.
“She better come in and say hi every day,” co-worker Megan Young said.
Ms Kirby wrote to the BDN earlier in the week to express her gratitude towards co-workers and customers.
“Thank you to all the wonderful people in Bega," she wrote. “I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all the lovely customers who visit the Post Office in Bega.
"I am retiring as of Friday 19th September and I thank you for your best wishes.
"I have enjoyed looking after you and having a chat and a laugh at the Post Office and will miss you all.
"I am not moving on, just changing hats so I look forward to catching up with you in the community, Ros."
