The championship event attracted shooters from Goulburn, Tumut, Cooma and Mallacoota to add to a solid local contingent.
The field totalling 29 shooters enjoyed sunshine throughout the event with targets flying very quickly.
The squads went out four times, attempting to shoot 25 targets in each round.
Unlike regular events, no one was able to shoot a clear round.
At the end of the first round, Cooma’s Peter Ewart led the field with a 24/25, closely followed by Phil Green, veteran Doug Blewitt and Alf Niesar on 23/25.
After a further 25 targets, Ewart maintained the lead on 47/50, with Green on 46/50 in second.
They were closely followed by Chris Davis on 45 and Niesar and Ray Welch on 44.
Round three saw a slight change, with Phil Green shooting 22 to lead with 68 from Ewart and Niesar on 66 and Chris Davis on 65.
Just one point further back on 64 was Welch.
With mere points separating the top scores, it meant any of the leading group could lift the winner’s sash.
Ewart again just missed one target.
Green had a solid 22 to equal Ewart 90/100.
Having to travel home to Cooma, Ewart conceded the shootoff round, leaving Green as a happy winner for the day.
The division winners in C Grade were first, Mick Diss, with Dick McInnes in second.
This was Diss’s second win in successive years in this event.
Members joked the “the honourable handicapper has taken note, no doubt”.
Winner in B grade was the club president Shane Platts, who kept a strong field at bay to claim victory with 83/100.
He finished just one shot ahead of James Body on 82.
Despite missing the shoot off, Peter Ewart collected the A grade sash with his 90.
The ever-consistent Chris Davis took out second with a score of 87.
The sponsors congratulated the winners, and all who attended.
Platts gave a quick talk and thanked all the volunteers who helped make the day a success.
Phil Green took the opportunity to thank the sponsors for their ongoing support while claiming his first place prize.
Members said without sponsors, the sport would be much less rewarding.
The club’s next shoot is set for October 5 with a 50 target double barrel and a 50 target point-score.
Practice starts at 9am with the competition launcing at 10am.
