The Sapphire Coast Orchid Club’s annual Spring Orchid Show has attracted over 170 entries of exceptional quality.
The show started today at 9am and will close at 4pm before reopening on Friday for another 9am-4pm showing.
John Tanner of the Sapphire Coast Orchid Club said it had been a mild winter that had seen some orchids come out early but the quality this year was still great.
“There is a particularly good display of speciosums this year,” Mr Tanner said.
“We had a judge from Sydney and another from Wagga here last night and they were both very impressed by the quality of the orchids.”
This year’s Grand Champion Orchid of Show was a speciosum called Daylight Moon grown by Michael Wood of Kalaru.
The judges thought Mr Wood’s winning entry was so good they have encouraged him to enter it in national shows happening later this year.
Winners of the Reserve Champion Orchid of Show were Bobby and Muriel Bell of Eden who won with a cymbidium, Dorothy Stockstill “Forbidden Fruit”.
Mr Bell said he had been growing orchids for 40 years and enjoyed participating in the club’s annual show.
“We do alright at them, we’ve got a few entries that have winner’s cards on them today,” he said.
In addition to a display of winners and other entrants, the Sapphire Coast Orchid Club has orchid posies for sale and a raffle with two beautiful orchids as the first and second prizes.
The Bega Scout Hall is on Gipps St, Bega. Entry is free.
