- Bega Valley's Norma Allen and Dorothy Mullaney named on 2014 Hidden Treasures Honor Roll.
BEGA Valley Shire Councillor Liz Seckold always encourages locals to nominate worthy volunteers for the Hidden Treasures Honour Roll, but never expected to be placed on it herself.
This year, fellow BVSC councillor Sharon Tapscott turned the tables on Ms Seckold by nominating her.
“I have only known Liz since I joined council in 2012, but it’s allowed me to see what she does close up and it’s incredible what she does for the community,” Cr Tapscott said
The nomination was seconded by Mayor Bill Taylor who noted, “Liz always has the community’s best interests at heart whether it’s something like SPAN [Suicide Prevention and Action Network], or sports or the arts”.
In addition to SPAN, the nomination recognised the work Ms Seckold has done as a volunteer for Clean Energy for Eternity, Friends of the Old Bega Hospital, Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, On Track (old Bega Racecourse), Pig and Whistle committee at Tathra Wharf Museum, South East Arts and South East Regional Academy of Sport.
Ms Seckold considers her most important work that of working with teenagers and their families as part of her role of Head Teacher Welfare at Bega High School before her retirement from teaching, which eventually led to becoming involved in SPAN.
Ms Seckold was the only one of the local nominees to make it to the NSW Rural Women’s Gathering in Coolamon last weekend where the 2014 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll was launched.
“It was a lovely event, I got to listen to Bettina Arndt and NSW Farmers president Fiona Simon speak and met some wonderful women active in the Lock the Gates group,” she said.
“Coolamon is where my husband’s family is from, so it had a special meaning to be there for this event,” she said.
Ms Seckold said she will back next year encouraging locals to nominate worthy volunteers.
“I’m a little embarrassed by all this I have to say, but I think there are lots of deserving women in the Bega Valley and I hope they get their chance to be on the Honour Roll,” she said.
