Three of its eateries have been featured in the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2015 - il Passaggio, the Horse and Camel Wine Bar and Mister Jones.
Modern Italian restaurant il Passaggio, owned by Honor and Tim Northam, received an appetising review and a score of 13/20.
Opened five years ago, the restaurant has been mentioned in the Good Food Guide each year since.
While they have always made bread for their restaurant, last year Honor and Tim began selling handmade artisan sourdough named honorbread.
“I’ve always loved bread, even when I was not making it,” Honor said.
“Once I made my first loaf of bread I was hooked, I think I’ve made a loaf every week for the past 15 years.
“One loaf turned into two, then three, five – it’s very addictive making bread.
“Once you start making it you then need a way to offload and sell it.”
The reviewers of the Good Food Guide liked honorbread so much it is mentioned three times in the book, including under the Highlights of the Year.
“We were very stoked for our bread to be mentioned in the Good Food Guide,” Tim said.
“We got a good review for the restaurant as well, but to have our bread mentioned was really great.”
The sourdough is made over two days, and the Northam’s make around 200 loaves per week.
Bread has never been wasted at the restaurant – any leftover loaves are ground down to make breadcrumbs – and demand for the sourdough has been growing.
“We are definitely growing the business, I’d like to get to a stage where we are putting out 300 loaves a week and from there, who knows?” Tim said.
“As far as the business goes, it’s something that we can use as it compliments what we do in the restaurant.”
Honor said she makes sourdough because it is healthy, lasts longer than other bread and “because its breadmaking in its simplest form” utilising just flour, salt and water.
“But the biggest reason is because it tastes better!” she said.
Honor runs courses on making sourdough, the next one of which will be in November and for updates you can visit www.ilpassaggio.com.au.
The Northam’s honorbread is sold at Mister Jones, Bermagui Bridge Motors, Red Café, Sweet Home Cobargo and the Quaama General Store.
BERMAGUI’S “serious” coffee has scored a mention again in this year’s Good Food Guide.
Matt Jones is the artist and barista behind Mister Jones in Bunga St, an espresso bar and art space that often displays his original works.
Business has been going well, and the Good Food Guide said the shop “boasts perhaps the most serious coffee around”.
“It’s our fourth consecutive year and we just keep on doing what we’ve always done, which is make amazing coffee, and it’s nice to have someone notice that,” Mr Jones said.
“We offer an obsessive focus on well-crafted coffee.”
