Bega the Moosical is as it sounds – a musical, written and directed by Candy McVeity and performed by pupils from Bega Valley Public School.
It is the main play for Stage 3 this year, featuring pupils from Year 6 in main roles, supported by Year 5 and including some of Years 3 and 4 in a big song.
The school band will be playing the music, some of which will be original songs written by Ms McVeity and some that are parodies of well-known songs.
For instance, The Pub With No Beer has become The Farmer With No Milk in this production.
Ms McVeity said rehearsals have been taking place for the last six weeks and all the children were “really into it”.
“It’s a comedy, so there are lots of gags, and it is a lot of fun,” she said.
The story is about two boys – Andrew who comes from the city and David who comes from the country – who go camping in the bush and meet lots of talking, singing and dancing animals like kangaroos, cows and even some scary bunyips.
David’s father Joe is a dairy farmer whose cows leave his farm because they think they have been treated unfairly, and they befriend the young boys in a chaotic, musical adventure.
As there will be two lots of shows, Year 6 pupils Matt Rollason and Callum Alcock play David, and Brock and Riley Lucas play Andrew.
All the boys agreed they were looking forward to the performances. However, when asked if they would like to become actors when they grew up they said no – a footballer was a much preferred career.
Deciding on their favourite part in the play was a hard one.
“The one where we go and find a herd of cows and get lost,” Callum said.
“Then we just psych out about everything,” Riley added.
Tom Constance and Logan Reeve from Year 6 play two dogs owned by the farmer, and were asked what their favourite part of the play was.
“When we walk on the stage and find the cows,” Tom said.
“And then we start laughing at them,” Logan added.
Ms McVeity said tickets will likely sell out, so quickly book your spot for just $4 by contacting the school office on 6492 1280.
Shows will take place at the Bega Valley Public School hall on September 16 and 17, with a matinee performance at 11.30am and then one at 6.30pm on both days.
