That he will eclipse Furner now seems a foregone conclusion, and the centre could also be about to pass namesake Jason Croker as Canberra's games record-holder.

Meanwhile, his management is ramping up talks over a new deal.

Jarrod Croker's manager, Paul Sutton, plans to head to Canberra next week to continue discussions over a contract which would lock up the player until at least the end of 2017.

Croker, just 23, passed club legend Mal Meninga into third place when reaching 870 career points in last week's win over Cronulla. He now has Clinton Schifcofske (1052) and David Furner (1218) in his sights.

Furner and Schifcofske both backed Croker to "do it easy", Furner saying he is also capable of breaking Jason Croker's mark of 318 games.

At his current rate Jarrod Croker is on track to climb to the top of the tree early in the 2016 season, when he will be just 25 and in the prime of his career.

Croker is equal-second on this year's NRL try-scorer's list with 18 and his 180 points puts him just six points behind Cowboys skipper Johnathan Thurston.

Jarrod has missed few games because of injury, and is racking up matches at a faster rate than Canberra's games record-holder, Jason.

Both debuted at 18, Jarrod playing 138 games in six seasons. Jason tallied 131 in his first seven years.

Jarrod Croker, however, is prouder of captaining the side on his own for the first time when the Raiders take on Wests Tigers on Saturday. The Raiders will be shooting for their first back-to-back wins this year.

"It's nice when people mention it [points scoring] and it's obviously great company, but I wouldn't consider myself in that company yet,"  Croker said.

"It's good to get those little accolades and hear about them a bit, but there's nothing more I'd love than to finish the season off with two wins.

"There was a few little things [said between myself and Furner], but I was a fair bit behind him then, and still am."

Furner praised Croker's resolve to improve himself as a player and goalkicker after his missed late penalty goal condemned Canberra to a 2010 semi-final loss to the Tigers.

"Two things happen there, you become a better goalkicker or not kick again," Furner said. "His attitude and the competitor he is, he wouldn't rest on it.

"Records are meant to be broken. His goalkicking the last couple of seasons has been first class.

"Not only his goalkicking, but his whole game has matured. You forget how young he is. I still remember his first NRL game, we lost to Parramatta and there were a few things in the game he wasn't happy about.

"Right away, you could see how competitive he is."

Furner backed him to give Jason Croker's record a huge shake should he continue to avoid serious injury.

"He's very passionate about being there and playing for the Raiders. The amount of games he's played, he's already shown his durability and he's only going to get better and better."

"Some of the best centres didn't play their best footy until 26-27, there's plenty of time. There's no doubt he could achieve it."

Schifcofske has no doubt Croker will break the points record, and could amass a tally which will take some beating.

"He'll do it easy, he's a great goalkicker and scores a lot of tries," Schifcofske said.

"You don't look at those records when you're player but they're nice to look at when you're finished, because I do.

"You have to start young, not have many injuries and be a good player, which he is.

"They'd want to keep him, and I'm sure they'd be working pretty hard to get it done."

The Raiders will field a young team next year as vice-captain Brett White is to retire, Tom Learoyd-Lahrs is on the outer and doubt surrounds skipper Terry Campese's future.

Croker said he had not given any thought to a permanent captaincy, but said his own game had blossomed after he was given more responsibility.

"That's up to 'Sticky' [coach Ricky Stuart], but I've enjoyed this year taking on more of a leadership role," he said.

"It's not something I thought would happen when it has, but if it comes up I'll take it with both hands.

"As far as I'm concerned 'Campo's' still our club captain. I'm not looking too far into it."
