The Bega Valley Shire Council on Wednesday voted to accept a negotiated tender submission from Zauner Construction to replace the shed, which was destroyed by fire in September 2012.
A previous resolution of the council was to reject all submissions received after a public tender process and then negotiate with the preferred tenderer.
The decision was made after submissions received were all deemed too expensive (BDN, 29/7).
The re-negotiated submission has been costed at $600,000 (subject to variation).
Councillors voted unanimously to accept the new submission and Mayor Bill Taylor congratulated acting general manager Wayne Sartori for negotiating “considerable” savings with Zauner, “notwithstanding it [the price] is still above the original assessment”.
Cr Russell Fitzpatrick was also pleased to see the rebuilding work that much closer, and said with a smile while there was no pressure, “cricket season is fast approaching”!
Mr Sartori said to free up $600,000 for its construction, some other capital works scheduled for 2014/15 would need to be deferred.
The possible projects to be “juggled” were not discussed during open council, but it was alluded to they were part of confidential tender negotiation documents in possession of councillors.
What Mr Sartori could say was the new proposal retained the same floor plan, but savings were made in the way the building was seated on a ground level concrete slab, instead of a suspended one, and that several fittings such as a microwave and pie warmer were left out.
He said these could be supplied by the sporting facility’s user groups.
“They are small amounts, but they all add up to considerable savings,” Mr Sartori said.
