THE Sapphire Coast Anglican College (SCAC) is holding a Country Fair on August 16.

In order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the college, organiser Kirsty Umbers had the idea of an old school, traditional country fair.

“The aim is to show kids things that were done before iPads, iPods and computer games came in,” Ms Umbers said. 

“It’s to get kids to see what life was like, ‘back in the day’.”

The Bega and District Historical Machinery Club will be doing a display, as will the Volunteer Rescue Association.

There will also be sheep shearing, wood chopping, and blacksmith displays.

Students from SCAC will be demonstrating their bush dancing skills, as well as showing off their school work such as photographs, artworks, science experiments and a special performance by the school band. 

There will be plenty of activities for children including a jumping castle, petting zoo, damper cooking and plaster mould painting. 

There will also be market stalls with items like jewellery and treats for sale, and food stalls for those hungry bellies.

Ms Umbers said part of the inspiration came from wanting to show kids how to do such old-fashioned things such as washing and spinning clothes by hand, or how an old tractor needed to be run by fire. 

“It will hopefully be like a mini Bega Show,” she said.

The fair will run from 10am until 2pm on August 16 and while some activities will cost, entry is free. 

The event is part of an information/open day for the college, where people can visit, check out the college and ask teachers questions.
