Hayes Haulage beat out larger city companies on a contract tender for the removal and recycling of sleepers from Sydney Trains.
Sydney Trains is replacing all timber sleepers in its rail network with concrete ones.
The Sydney Trains/NSW Trains network covers rail lines from Bomaderry in the south to Newcastle, and west to the Blue Mountains.
For the 2014-15 financial year, Hayes expects to collect and repurpose around 18,500 sleepers.
Hayes Haulage has already started exporting the timbers to New Zealand from its North Bega depot and will retain some on site for local gardeners, builders and landscapers.
Tom Hayes, from Hayes Haulage, said some sleepers will also be taken back to the Maitland/Newcastle area to be used by a mine operator on its private rail line.
