Teaming up with Anthony Bonnell and Tim Slater, Jimmy is shooting for gold in the Bowlers with a Disability triples event.
He sent through his latest update just prior to his first taste of competition:
Hello all!
Nothing’s really happened since my last update; that’s if you count the opening ceremony, a ton of competition and medals falling Australia’s way as nothing much!
So firstly to the opening ceremony, what a bore… just kidding, it was actually quite the opposite!
During the day I bludged big time and finally it was time to dress up in our formal clobber.
Naturally I looked dashing; if only you could’ve seen me…
Anyway, it was seriously cool and walking out to a large crowd of massive noise when you are an Aussie team member just rocks!
I’m very lucky to be a member of a country which is so successful and so well supported.
But without doubt the highlight was still being a part of the ‘Aussie, Aussie Aussie, oi oi oi’ chant while we were in the tunnel waiting to go in.
Talk about a large group of people not knowing one another but being interconnected based on country and shared love of a country.
Anyway, it rocked except for the part where I was strategically placed in front of cameras (I wasn’t chasing coverage, I swear!), yet they would move as soon as it was time for me to be presented to the hemisphere.
Rude buggers! No wonder ratings were down!
But somehow throughout all these efforts, my grandmother saw me so the effort was worth it I reckon.
Ever since this amazing night it’s been full on competition, well for everyone else that is.
Our bowlers have been going really well in amazing, sunny conditions the first few days; I even got quite sunburnt.
We were so proud to see the Vision Impaired Mixed Pairs team of Joy Forster and Tony Scott win the bronze medal, and we can’t wait to see the men’s triples go for a bronze of their own.
Sometimes it can be a cruel game though, and despite great efforts Kelsey Cottrell, the men’s pairs an women’s fours teams weren’t able to score medals.
Gosh it’s been tough hanging around and supporting, but we are so ready I’ve got to tell you!
I also need to say how appreciative we are of all the amazing support we have received so far.
We will do our best and we’ll be doing everything we can to get the best possible result.
In short, we will have a crack!
Jimmy.
