Tributes will be paid to these blood donors during National Blood Donor Week (July 27-August 3).
National Blood Donor Week is an annual event to recognise the outstanding, life-saving contributions of blood, bone marrow and Anti-D donors.
Over the past year 500,000 blood donors have together made more than 1.3million blood donations.
These donations have gone on to help 3.9million people – one-fifth of the Australian population and a contribution likely to have touched the lives of every Australian.
Blood Service spokesperson Sally Gavin said while it’s known every blood donation helps to save three lives, the overall impact of each donation reaches so much further.
“Blood donors change more than just the three lives they help to save with each blood donation,” she said.
“A donation of blood has a ripple effect, from the person receiving the blood, right through to their family and their friends.
“Blood donors help save the family and friends of patients needing blood from the inconceivable prospect of losing a loved one.”
More Australians are being urged to get involved.
“Surgical patients, new mothers and people with cancer all rely on blood donations,” Ms Gavin said.
“One donation takes just one hour of your time and will make an amazing difference to the lives of others.”
* The donor mobile will visit Bega from August 4-8, located in the Littleton Gardens council car park.
Appointments are still available.
