In the 1960s and 1970s, pure loose-fill asbestos was sold as ceiling insulation for residential and commercial premises – mainly by one company trading in the ACT as Mr Fluffy.
According to the WorkCover website, the insulation is raw asbestos that has been crushed into a fine state and installed in the ceiling space.
This means it is easy to disturb and fibres can become airborne and easily inhaled or ingested, which can cause significant health risks.
More than 1000 homes in Canberra and around 11 in Queanbeyan are thought to be affected.
Member for Bega Andrew Constance said the full extent of the problem and whether it extends to the Bega Valley is unknown.
“We have no idea where in the region this contractor went in the ‘60s and ‘70s,” Mr Constance said.
“There is none found in the Bega Valley yet, but we are being very, very cautious and urging anyone with concerns to come forward.
“The Bega Valley is one of 14 councils the head of our asbestos coordinator group is liaising.”
Mr Constance said anyone with concerns their home may have the Mr Fluffy insulation, or possible contamination despite its removal, should contact WorkCover on 13 10 50 or the Bega Valley Shire Council on 6499 2222.
