Year 5 pupils will walk 15.5km from Mumbulla Mountain to their school on Friday.
The class of 25 will walk with 10 parents and their teacher Rachel Alves, with the aim of raising funds to support Oxfam.
“It’s a stroll around the park,” one pupil said.
“We will walk up and down hills, and support some guys,” was another’s comment.
The children are doing their own fundraising, collecting donations to go towards Oxfam’s activities, and Ms Alves estimated the class would raise over $1000 from the trek.
When asked who had been getting sponsored, all children put their hands up - one pupil had already raised over $200, and another $60.
And what do they know about Oxfam?
“They help people help themselves,” one girl chirped.
The children will begin their walk at 9.30am from Quarry Rd and walk down Reedy Swamp Rd supported by two cars on their way into town to arrive at school around 4pm.
“It’s a Mumbulla to Mumbulla walk,” Ms Alves said.
The idea of the trek came from a team of four parents who are doing the Oxfam Trailwalker 100km in 48 hours, and who will be joining the pupils on the day as part of their trek.
Their team is called Chafing at the Bit, and are aiming to raise $4000 to go towards Oxfam, already raising over $2500.
Many of the children had been getting into practice for the trip in their own time, and some thought it would be easy because they had already gone on 12km, 17km even 35km walks before.
Raising money for Oxfam and going on a big adventure isn’t the only thing some of the children are looking forward to, either.
“Do we get to eat potato chips on the way?” one boy asked with a hopeful grin.
Ms Alves said the Mumbulla to Mumbulla trek could turn into a regular event for the school if this one works well.
Donations are welcome, and can be made by contacting the school or donating at the Chafing at the Bit website at trailwalker.oxfam.org.au/team/home/18214.
