The 16-week fee-free course, which will run from will be run from 4.30-8.30pm at Bega TAFE, has been very popular with students who were pleasantly surprised how much they enjoyed the variety and inspiration.
Making a Buck from Beetroot helps local growers plan to get their food business off the ground.
It may also appeal to people who are looking for a change of direction, or have an idea but are not sure how to progress it.
Highlights of the course are a farm visit day, food production in the TAFE commercial kitchen and hearing from many guest speakers who provide first-hand experience of their own business journey.
The timing of this course responds to requests from prospective students.
“We found that many who are interested in the course were not able to make it to TAFE during the day,” course facilitator Julie Davies said.
“So for this session we scheduled the classes to accommodate those who have other commitments, but would still like to pursue their food business dream.”
The course has been designed by SCPA South East Producers in partnership with TAFE’s General Education and Outreach departments.
The presenters are local people who understand the natural and commercial influences that affect a local food enterprise.
“We’ve created this course with no prerequisite, so whether you’re a backyard farmer or a more established producer, you will benefit from the program,” Bega TAFE General Education head teacher David Grainger said.
Manager of Ricky’s Place Vicki Hancock was thrilled recently to receive a donation of profits from the participants of the previous Making a Buck from Beetroot.
The group had developed two tomato-base sauces during their course.
Strong marketing and branding saw the product sell out within three hours at the Bega SCPA Market.
The exercise proved a profit is possible from running a local food business.
Ricky’s Place, run out of St John’s Anglican Church hall in Bega, is an organisation supporting local people.
Its sustainable ethos is a natural fit with the TAFE course and the students unanimously selected this service as the charity to receive profits from the sales.
