The site covers one-and-a-half hectares and although the demountable classrooms have been removed, the permanent classrooms, the new library building and the covered play area are still there.
The Department of Roads and Marine Services used the site for its headquarters during the building of the Bega Bypass.
However, after the road's completion the Department of Education put it on the market.
The property was valued at $500,000, but a public auction in March failed to come up with suitable price.
The property was listed by Elders Real Estate Bega, which announced the sale on its Facebook webpage on Tuesday.
On its Facebook page, Elders said Bega West had been sold to Sydney investors who had plans to open a long day care centre at the old school.
In the comments, Elders said the new owners are non-government business owners that have seen a need and opportunity in Bega.
They also said they hoped within the next 12 months there would be another option for child care in the town.
In an interview with ABC South East, one of the partners, Jennifer Friedli, said while she wasn’t sure how many children it would accommodate, the day care centre would service children from birth to school age.
Bega Valley Family Day Care admin coordinator Joanna Rideaux said having more options for child care in the region was good as it allowed parents to choose which service suited their child the best.
“I think that parents need good child care choices,” she said.
“We’re all different.”
