The couple were married at St John’s Anglican Church in Bega on June 12, 1954.
Mr Huggett, who lived in Cooma, first saw Betty Monck of Bega at his brother’s wedding.
“My brother married Betty’s cousin and so I met her that day,” he said.
“Getting married was the best thing my brother ever did because it’s where Betty and I met!
“We’ve been married now for 60 years.
“I guess I would say the secret to being married for so long is picking the right person in the first place.”
Mr Huggett moved to the Bega Valley after meeting his soon-to-be wife and had a long career as a builder and carpenter.
The couple made their home in Tathra and had three children.
The Huggetts now have eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mr Huggett said he didn’t think they would have a party for their sixtieth anniversary but added “you never know with our daughter Sue”.
It was the couple’s daughter Sue Hergenhan who told the BDN about her parent’s diamond anniversary.
“They are still smiling after 60 years of marriage,” Ms Hergenhan said.
