Over 100 people enjoyed a range of Mexican dishes and free salsa lessons by Trish Howard from the Pambula Latin American Social Dance Club.
Friends of Bemboka Pool spokesperson Helmut Eder was pleased with the turn-out at Bemboka Memorial Hall.
“Bemboka celebrated not only its love of the salsa, but also showed great support of our local swimming pool by raising a total of $1062 in support of pool repairs on the night,” he said.
A raffle that has been running since the Bemboka Show in March was drawn on the night, raising an additional $800.
Mr Eder thanked Spicy Jam, Patrick Reubinson and the army of willing kitchen volunteers for the delicious Mexican feast, as well as Bega Cheese and Coles for their contribution.
He also thanked local businesses with their support in collecting signatures for the pool petition which the Friends of the Bemboka Pool will present to Bega Valley Shire Council next month, including Bemboka Pie Shop, Crystals 'n’ Lace, Drover's Rest Cafe and the Bemboka Post Office.
Mr Eder said the aim of the fundraisers and the committee itself was to show BVSC the community was serious about working with council staff to keep the pool maintained and open beyond the 2014/15 season.
Bemboka Pool was closed in late January following a chlorine leak and the discovery of other equipment problems in need of major repair.
While council has assured the Bemboka community the pool will reopen in October, council staff is currently undertaking a review of the feasibility of all pools in the shire.
