Valued at more than $300, the prizes Ms Robertson received were a full year’s subscription to The Australians in the Great War 1914-1918 Murray’s Memory Penny Diary, and Sands of Gallipoli 2014 limited edition medallions.
The competition was run in conjunction with the organisations Australia in the Great War and Soldier On, which works with today’s wounded service people and gets a percentage of product sales.
“I’m blown away,” Ms Robertson said.
“I can’t believe that I have won it, I suppose I am pretty lucky.
“This is beautiful.”
She said her husband will “be over the moon” when he sees the prize.
There is a history of service in Ms Robertson’s family as her uncle was in the 1st Light Horse Brigade in WW1, aged 16 when he enlisted, and her father fought in WW2.
“This is so close to me, with Uncle Bill in WW1,” Ms Robertson said of the prize pack.
Ms Robertson herself served in the army for 12 months during the Vietnam War as a paymaster, where she had the responsibility of paying troops as well as local Vietnamese who ran the utilities.
She would have to add up salaries in US dollar, and in order to pay the Vietnamese workers she would convert the dollar into the local currency as the Vietnamese were not allowed to be given the US dollar.
“I’d like to thank the people who organised it all, it will be greatly appreciated,” she said about the prize.
“I’d also like to say thanks to the Bega District News for running the competition.
“I’m not usually at a loss for words!”
