UPDATED, 9.30am Saturday: THE Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for the South Coast, predicting damaging winds and dangerous surf.
A low pressure system currently developing off the NSW South Coast is forecast to deepen and move slowly to the north/northeast Saturday evening.
This system is bringing gales to waters off the southern half of the NSW Coast, and these gales are expected to extend westwards to include coastal areas in the Sydney Metropolitan, Illawarra and South Coast forecast districts later Saturday morning and the Hunter in the afternoon.
Large waves are expected to accompany the gales.
Conditions are expected to ease later on Saturday.
Damaging winds averaging around 65kmh with peak gusts of 100kmh are forecast to affect coastal areas in the Sydney Metropolitan, Illawarra and South Coast forecast districts Saturday morning and the Hunter Coast in the afternoon.
Very heavy surf that may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion is forecast for parts of the Hunter, Sydney Metropolitan, Illawarra and South Coast forecast districts.
Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony; and
* keep clear of fallen power lines.
For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
