So what better way to celebrate the creativity of the Bega community than by a Festival of the Face?
The Bega Chamber of Commerce has launched the idea of a festival to coincide with the 2014 Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award hosted by the Bega Valley Regional Gallery in June.
Chamber president Mal Barnes said he is now on the lookout for any individual, community group or business venture to help drive the festival and populate the month of June with creative ideas based on the theme of the face.
“It is a chamber initiative, but we are still after others to help drive it,” Mr Barnes said.
“We want people talking about it and helping out where they can.”
Mr Barnes said any group wanting to host an event during the month-long festival is welcome to put forward their thoughts.
“It could be a masquerade ball, art groups with exhibitions…anything to do with the face at all,” he said.
An information pamphlet making its way around town at the moment says the Festival of the Face would complement the Shirley Hannan Portrait Award as well as offer opportunities to celebrate creativity of the wider community, generate business and encourage visitors to the area.
Mr Barnes said while the first Festival of the Face will likely be Bega-oriented, he said there is potential for such a unique idea to grow throughout the whole region with associated art trails or similar initiatives.
Anyone interested in helping drive the idea of the festival, or with ideas on what could be included, is encouraged to email festivaloftheface.1@gmail.com or visit the blog at festivaloftheface.blogspot.com.au.
