ALL over Australia in the lead-up to December, communities are gathering to celebrate the abilities of people from all walks of life - particularly people some label as having a disability.
However, the International Day for People with a Disability (IDPwD) is all about ditching the “dis” and celebrating “ability”.
This year, the focus for IPDwD in the Bega Valley will centre on Bermagui with a musical feast and day of entertainment to be held on Sunday, from noon until 4pm at the Bermagui Country Club.
Community member Adele Wilson has been instrumental in organising this year’s event.
“We’ve tried a few different things over the years, but the north of the shire is always left out a bit, so this year we decided to have an event in Bermagui,” Ms Wilson said.
“The Bermagui Country Club was very happy to host the event and has been terrific in supporting us.”
Great support has also been forthcoming from Bega Valley Shire Council, Respite Care Bega Valley, Tulgeen Disability Service, Workability and Ageing, Disability and Home Care.
“It’ll be a really fantastic day, we’ve got a great bunch of musicians coming together, with well-known names like Damon Davies and Ricky Bloomfield joining others that maybe aren’t quite household names yet – including myself and my daughter Martine,” Ms Wilson said.
“We’re ready to put on a great performance – rehearsals just blew us away, the music was that good!”
Martine Horder, also performing in the musical extravaganza, said there’ll be plenty of other entertainment for young and old, with Rhys the Magician, a chocolate wheel with plenty of prizes, face-painting for the kids and a visit from Santa for the young at heart.
Ms Wilson is hoping the community will get behind this event and make it a success.
“A lot of effort has been put in to make this a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon – come along from midday to 4pm at the Bermagui Country Club and enjoy some great entertainment,” she said.
“Bring the kids and make it a family day.
“Tickets are only $10, kids are free. Just call me on 6493 6494 to book in.”
