THE Sapphire Coast Turf Club will play its part on Melbourne Cup Day.
This Tuesday, the club will host a full day of races to coincide with Australia’s premier racing event.
Club secretary/manager Rob Tweedie said preparations were on track for next week’s meeting.
Mr Tweedie said Melbourne Cup Day was hugely important on the Australian sporting calendar.
“There’s a holiday in Melbourne and it’s recognised worldwide,” he said.
“Basically around lunchtime on Tuesday, all of Australia shuts down.”
Mr Tweedie said Tuesday would be a “non-TAB race day”, meaning people can only bet locally and not through NSW TAB.
He said there will be small fields and no feature race at the turf club.
There will be also plenty of interest off the race-track on Tuesday.
Women and men will dress up in striking attire for the Fashions on the Field.
The Fashions on the Field competition will start at around 2.30pm.
Mr Tweedie said the club was hoping to see a good turnout of local punters.
“We expect a bumper crowd,” he said.
“Most people are interested in the Melbourne Cup – it really is the race that stops a nation.”
Gates will open at 10.30am on Tuesday.
Free buses will be running from the Gipps St bus shelter, Bega, at 11.30am and Tathra Hotel at 11.55am .
A return bus will run from the Sapphire Coast Turf Club for Tathra and Bega at 5pm.
