Eagles eye fresh start

THE Tathra Sea Eagles are gearing up for a big 2013 Group 16 season.

The senior rugby league team will return to training at Lawrence Park on January 23 from 6pm.

The side, for the second successive year, will be guided by head coach Scott Barton.

After the Eagles missed the finals in 2012, Barton said he was keen to taste more success this season.

“We’re looking towards having an exciting year ahead with our up and comers,” he said.

Leading that crop of youth is Rhys Cunningham, Josh Shepherdson, Dillon Aldridge and Dan Hyland.

Brady Cochrane had a taste of senior action last season and is also expected to step up.

At the other end of the scale, a group of experienced players will need to be strong.

Reigning best and fairest winner Haywood Fraser has signed up for another season while Josh Cochrane and Arthur Coffee can be relied upon.

Barton said he was excited to announce the signing of Clay Charles, a utility who has moved down from Gymea in the Cronulla competition.

Charles could add much-needed strength to Tathra’s forward pack, but could slot in at five-eighth.

According to Barton, the Eagles were in talks with a couple of other possible recruits.

The club is also excited to announce Sam Watson and Jared Cole, both 20, have taken over the reins as reserve grade coaches.

Barton said the pair had taken it upon themselves to lead the team and were looking for mates to sign up.

Barton invited everyone to head along for a light training session on January 23, which will be followed by a barbecue.
