Bega Fire Control Centre’s crucial role

THE Bega Fire Control Centre was a hive of activity this week.

The centre, located on Maher St, played a crucial role in hosting Rural Fire Service personnel as bushfires broke out across the local area.

RFS community service officer Marty Webster said the building was a “meeting point” for the small management team.

The BDN dropped by the control centre on Tuesday and, after reaching the main room, it was the equivalent of stepping into a bunker.

RFS personnel and members of the Bega Valley Shire Council were busily studying maps, chatting and making plans to contain the bushfires.

A focal point was the bushfire on Warrigal Range Rd, Brogo.

Mr Webster admitted that everyone involved was exhausted, but said the centre was managing well.

“It is well resourced, but we are all very busy,” he said.
