 Is Bega really nothing?

Is Bega really nothing?

11 Dec, 2009 09:31 AM
THERE’S an interesting letter in today’s issue, but then all our letters are interesting.

It’s from Barb Aggenbach of Merimbula who, at the end of her letter, says: “The southern part of the shire is only the Golden Laying Goose Egg for Bega and for the betterment and progress of the north. Without us Bega has nothing.”

Is that true?

Do we have nothing without the input of our southern neighbours?

It is certainly something to ponder.

The other question is: do all the southerners think like that?

We would welcome letters from anyone who thinks Barb has got it wrong.

Surely we need to defend ourselves.

Newcomers to the Valley can sense an obvious difference between the people in the growing coastal areas and the old, more staid, inland towns, but isn’t that something we should cherish, not fight about?

There is so much that is great about this place that inward looking, parochial people - passionate though they may be - might be missing.

Maybe they should look at what else there is around here that is good and worthwhile.

While there is distinct diversity in our population, are there people out there who are really that jealous and paranoid that we have to vent our feelings in this way?

You’d imagine there are more important issues in our lives to worry about than to have that sort of quote on your mind.

If people are so unhappy that resorting to denigrating others is all they can do then it’s time for them to stop and have a good think.

It was Anne Frank who said “we all live with the objective of being happy; our lives are all different and yet they are all the same.”

Anne said it quite well, didn’t she?

ANOTHER issue being debated at the moment is safety at the Tathra Wharf.

The meeting on Monday night was well attended and everyone there was mindful of the circumstances that caused it.

Most of the recommendations were accepted by the meeting as being quite reasonable.

The perimeter fence was discussed at length with some differing opinions and in the end the consensus was that it would create more problems than it fixed.

But it was not the only barrier, physical or otherwise, discussed.

It should be pointed out that before anyone goes off accusing council of not doing anything, or assuming decisions have been made when they haven’t, perhaps they should find out exactly what has or has not been discussed or proposed.

Barking about assumptions does no one any good.

On one hand it has been said council has not acted quickly enough and on the other it has been said everything has been rushed.

It is a very difficult situation and made no easier by constant carping and criticism.

Council must take into consideration all the community’s views and act accordingly.

And most importantly, it must inform the community exactly what has been recommended in plain, simple language so everyone with an interest can understand.

That should happen as quickly as possible.

THE meeting about the proposed Wanatta Lane tip on Tuesday evening, although also well attended, was much more vocal.

It didn’t get off to a very good start with the moderator clashing with a few in the audience.

It took about 20 minutes to get to the new EIS, which according to those present, didn’t shed any new light on the subject.

This issue has been around for years and has the look of being around for a few more.

The money being spent and the time it is taking to finalise, is getting out of hand.

Democracy is important and everyone needs to have their say, but sometime soon, someone is going to have to make a decision about whether it goes ahead or not.

If it is to be built let’s get on with it.

If it is not and we need to find somewhere else, how much is that going to cost and are we going to go through the same argument for years and years?

Someone do something.

Please.
