In the semi finals on Tuesday night there were some surprising results.
In Division 1 the Highway Store reversed last week's three game loss to Westpac to beat them by 12 games to seven. Dennis Curtis began well for the Store upsetting Mark Lane in five.
Last weekend's Bus trip took it's toll on Mark as he appeared to still being affected by PJs schnapps and Dennis pounced for a vital win.
Rhonda Crowe followed up making it a dismal night for the Lane's when she toppled Rhonda Lane, also in five.
Things went from bad to worse as Cindy Turner beat Kim Bobbin in three and Wayne Thelan wrapped up the contest beating Leanne Heyhorn 3/0. This gave Highway Store a winning 12/4 before Andrew High lent his side some respectability beating Norm Griffin in 3.
The Highway Store played David Scott Electrical.
The trend continued in Division 3 when Travelworld scored 10 points to Tarra Ford 8, leaving the early premiership favourites out of the grand final.
Credit to Travelworld who have had to struggle just to make the semi's, now they are looking at having a crack at PJs for the title.
Nicole Eadie looked to have set Tarra on their way with a 3/0 win over Mark Canavan however this was followed by 3 upset wins to Travelworld as Megan Zonneveld evened the score beating Aaron Haigh 3/0.
Nikki Hazelgrove gave them a small lead beating Debbie Cash in five then Jodie Moon sealed the night with a 3/0 win to give her side an unassailable 9/5 lead. John Stylianou won his match for Tarra beating Peter Bolst, who subbed for new
dad David Armstrong, 3/1.
Travelworld met P J O'Brien.
In Division 2 C B Smash Repairs also won through from third place when they eliminated second placed Sapphire Coast Trophies 11 games to nine. Beau Haigh won the first match of the night beating Kim Hinde 3/2 but Kim's two games proved vital as the night unfolded.
Birthday girl Debbie Hazelgrove then showed age is no barrier to good squash winning three straight over Stacey Whitford to give the Smash Repairers a 5/3 lead. Murray Russell put Sapphire Trophies within one game when he beat Kate Whitford 3/2.
Dick Ruse's fine form went out the window when he struck a rampant Brad Schwind,
Brad's 3/0 win put his team in a 10/6 lead that was impossible for their stand in captain (Steve Galeano took ill) Steven Bolst to reel in despite, Steven him rolling Chris Bartlett in three.
C B Smash Repairs met Shirley Hannon's Turingal.
In Division 4, guess what, second placed E I Pell lost 9/10 to Bega Commercial Cleaners.
The Cleaners were away to a good start, they selected the better sub in Craig Hayman who beat EI's sub Michael Haigh in five.
Casey Back improved the Cleaners situation when she beat long term rival Ian Bell 3 games to 1.
Andrew Tremblay- Birchall was in blistering form against a gallant Gary Backhouse but Andrew's 3/0 win meant the result was in early for the Cleaners their 9/3 lead meant they could not be beaten.
This did not deter Donna Moore who was on a mission in her match up with Craig Bassett, though we suspect Craig may have been saving himself when he allowed Donna to beat him 3/0?
Craig Snowden won 3/1 over Sam Blacka to reduce the margin to 10 games to 9 but it was too little too late.
Bega Commercial Cleaners had their appointment with Chemworld.
GRAND FINALS
The grand finals were played last Thursday night and is always the case there were the upsets, thrillers and disappointments, chokes and excitement for the winners.
In Division 1 David Scott Electrical dominated again, as they had all season. Jeff Cheers lead them away with a great 3/0 win against a seasoned finals performer in Rhonda Crowe of the Highway Store team.
Hopes for the Highway Store flickered briefly when Dennis Curtis overwhelmed Mark Irvin in the final two games to win a five-setter.
Daniel Coman quickly had the Electricians back in control when he subbed for an "indisposed" Mark Hart and knocked over Wayne Thelan in another five set match to regain his teams 3 game lead.
Matt Hall was up next for David Scott playing Cindy Turner. Matt had had a great competition and finished it off for his team beating a gallant Cindy in four.
At this stage David Scott Electrical lead 11/6 making the A Graders match a dead rubber. Jeff Row put the icing on the cake as he also won 3/0.
Final result for Division 1 David Scott Electrical 14 d the Highway Store 6.
Division 2 was an entirely different story.
Shirley Hannon's Turingal had lost just once through the year but were looking shaky as the finals approached and C B Smash Repairs were up for the challenge. To add a bit of extra spice to the night Chris Bartlett was leading his own Smash Repairs team against Zip's combination that included Emma Bartlett who was undefeated.
The opening match between Kim Hinde and Emma Bethell was one that could go either way and set up a great battle.
After being one game all then two games all the girls were set to battle in the fifth which Kim finally won 17/14.
After narrowly losing the first match Zip played his trump card, Emma Bartlett. Sadly Emma was the wrong suit, as Debbie Hazelgrove played a blinder. Emma had lost her first match and Shirley Hannons were down 4/6.
Brad Schwind had the opportunity to sew up the result against Matt Taylor and played his third great match in a row, one that surely would have seen him promoted had he played next comp.
Brad's 3/0 win left the Minor premiers in tatters with an impossible 3/9 deficit, belated wins to Zip Summerell over Chris Bartlett 3/1 and Guy VanBracht, who subbed for Peter Nicholson and beat Kate Whitford 3/1 could only make the score line look a little kinder.
Final result for Division 2, C B Smash Repairs 11 d Shirley Hannon's Turingal 9.
Division 3 provided the thriller, played between P J O'Brien Electronics the favourites and Travelworld
The latter, who had battled to make the semis, had an upset win there, then faced the grand final with two players missing - Jodie Moon who had performed well through out, and their captain David Armstrong who had a reasonable excuse as he was in Canberra with wife Melinda and their newborn daughter. .
The night began in almost routine fashion with Megan Kennedy beating Kylie Baesler, who subbed for Jodie to give PJs a 3/0 lead. Nikki Hazelgrove, who had won the player of the semis award, produced another great performance to beat Peter O'Brien who it was said struggled to come up after the weekend.
Nikki won in five and PJs still held a 5/3 lead and were looking comfortable, particularly as the next match featured their finalist specialist Geoff Headly who was to play Megan Zonneveld,
The only hint of trouble was the amount of space in the gallery taken up by John Stylianou as he moved in to place with his Dog, Cane and dark glasses to ref the match.
Geoff began well taking the first game but struggled in the next, still getting up 17/16, the third proved a turning point as Megan won it well and gained confidence.
When Megan won the fourth it was obvious the battle was on, she did well to hold firm in the fifth against a very seasoned and determined opponent.
At this stage PJs still led, but only by a nervous 7 games to 6.
Bev Tarlinton filled in for Jason Sale against Mark Canavan and won a crucial. match
Mark Lane was to sub for the absent Col Ferguson while Peter Bolst became David Armstrong for the night, Mark needed just one game to secure a win, Peter had to win 3/0 and Peter played a great match to shut Mark out and tie scores at 10 games all.
This gave the win to Travelworld on rubbers. Meaning once again Headly and P J had come up short on rubbers.
Final result for Division 3, Travelworld 10 games & 3 rubbers d P J O'Brien Electronics 10 games & 2 rubbers.
Division 4
In Division 4, Chemworld were favourites, but Bega Commercial Cleaners was the sentimental favourite with the crowd as they were the battlers going into the finals without their injured leader.
Casey Back embodied the Cleaners spirit when she beat the higher credentialed Nathan Umback 3/1, Casey has improved greatly throughout the year and it was a great result for her.
Megan Irvin took the court determined to restore her teams situation and won her first game 15/4 over a nervous Sam Blacka, but Sam regrouped well to take the next two games and a big up set was looming. Megan and Sam both lifted their games in the fourth and fifth but Megan was just too strong.
At the end of this match it was amazing to reflect on how much both girls had improved throughout the comp and they put on a great match.
At this stage the Cleaners still lead at 5/4. Andrew Tremblay- Birchall and Hayden Kidd were next and for two young fellas showed few finals jitters, quickly settling down to long and string rallies before Andrew won the match 3/1 after four hard games.
By now the Cleaners were out to an 8/5 lead. Tim Benson-Taylor was undefeated and it would take a supreme effort by Craig Bassett to hold out Chemworlds final charge,
Tim showed the form he has produced all comp to beat Craig 3/0 and by now games were locked at 8 all.
The Cleaners hopes now lay with stand in Craig Hayman while Chemworld's lay with the old warhorse Peta Tatnell.
Peta has been a fine performer over many years in crunch situations and this proved the case in this final Peta accounted for Craig in the push and shove of things 3/0.
Final result for Division 4, Chemworld 11 d Bega Commercial Cleaners 8.
Proceedings were then transferred in to the clubhouse where presentations were made and games replayed. Funnily enough a few refereeing decisions were reversed but all the results remained the same. Special awards made on the night were to our undefeated players Emma Bartlett and Tim Benson-Taylor, "Galeano Cup" winners were Tony and Ketryn Hanscombe, while the "Big Sheila" went to Mark Hart.
ong service Certificates were awarded to 20 year members Michael Haigh and Zip Summerell. "Top Video Player of the semis" was Nikki Hazelgrove and "player of the final" Peter Bolst.
