Olympian wins Dash for Cash

Fox, from the ACT, won the 1200 metre race in a time of 15 minutes 58 seconds, despite an injured left shoulder, the result of a cycling accident only a week earlier.

He had also swum, and won, his 600-metre age race only a short while before.

The first female across the line, in a time of 16 minutes 17 seconds, was Valory Walburger (17) of Merimbula.

Valory migrated to Australia from South Africa just a few months ago and the Tathra event was her first ever open water race.

The race was swum in testing choppy conditions brought on by a strong north easterly wind which made the outward leg difficult but assisted the swimmers once they had rounded the final buoy and headed towards the beach.

John, a regular competitor in this type of event was full of praise for the organisers. “It was one of the best run swims I’ve competed in. It was a great first up effort and I’ll certainly be back to compete next year,” he said.

The best performed local male and female were Andrew and Lauren McNamara who each finished in second place with times of 16 minutes 01 seconds and 17 minutes 28 seconds respectively.

Winners in each of the 600 metre Age races were- 10-13 male Andrew McNamara, female Alyce Kelso; 14-17 male Dane Paczkowski, female Lauren McNamara; 18-29 male John Wiley, female Zoe Harris; 30-39 male John Fox, female Sharon George; 40-49 male Paul Hawking, female Amanda Murphy, 50 plus male Garry Rydberg, female Natalie Galvin.

At the completion of the events the event sponsors on Tathra Beach, in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd presented placegetters with their prizes and medallions.

The day’s events concluded with a dinner at the Tathra Hotel on Sunday night.
