THE Group 16 Rugby League Under 14 representative side travelled to Win Stadium at Wollongong on June 14 to take on Central Coast in the latest round of the 2003 Country Rugby League Championships.
The team comprised Wayne Northey Captain Game 3, Dylan Curtis (Bega), James Dirou, Ben Parson, Tom McMillon (Pambula), Justin Bell, Jarrad Kennedy (Tuross), Tom Robson, Jaemen Jamieson (Tathra), James Grinrod, James Streater, Clint Wright (Narooma), Sam Bowie, Jake Bowles-Captain games 1&2, Adam Bohun, Daniel Blewitt, Wade Merritt, Haydn Matthews (Batemans Bay).
Luck was never on their side however with key playmaker Jake Bowles withdrawing before the game after succumbing to an old injury and the loss of Group 16s outstanding fullback James Dirou after only four minutes of play.
Despite the adversary Group 16 adapted quickly to the makeshift changes and turned on a marvellous display of junior league skills.
In the last ten minutes the atmosphere at Win Stadium was electric with Group 16 looking dominant and gaining momentum and Central Coast desperately clinging onto an 18-14 lead. In a twist of fate Central Coast scored two late tries against the run of play to run away with a deserving win.
Sam Bowie won the 'Man of the Match' football. Ben Parson was the most improved player.
Tries were scored by Daniel Blewitt, Wayne Northey and Dylan Curtis while
Dain Bamblett-Clarke kicked one goal.
The team and its coaching staff were highly commended by the St George-Illawarra Dragons Development Officer after the game.
Coach Kel Jamieson thanked the players for their great attitude and commitment, their excellent behaviour and for making it a super enjoyable time for all.
Kel also acknowledged the outstanding contribution made by Manager Steve Kennedy, Trainer Graeme Bell and Sports Medicine Trainer Janiece Fowler-Eruera.
