Locals share honours

INEXPERIENCE and varied skill levels were exploited during two Premier League contests on Saturday between Bega/Angledale and Tathra.

The clubs shared the honours as the Gold’s thumped Tathra White by nine wickets while the Maroons scored a comfortable victory over Bega/Angledale Blue.

Tathra Maroon moved into fourth position on the ladder after wrapping up a six-wicket win at the Bega Valley Field.

Captain Peter Bennett correctly called the toss and sent the Blues in to bat, a decision which paid dividends early when Peter Hull was bowled by Ben Fielding for 0.

Hamish Willcox joined the opener in the pavilion minutes later when he was adjudged LBW to Fielding.

Harley Rainbow and Brad Moon then looked to rebuild the innings while Fielding and Adam Elliott bowled a discipline spell in tandem.

The pair forged a 13-run partnership before disaster struck for the Blues when three wickets fell in rapid succession.

Rainbow was the first man to go, caught by wicketkeeper Matt O’Reilly off Elliott, before Moon and captain Angus Robertson were also dismissed.

At 5/20 Bega/Angle-dale badly needed to steady the ship and they managed to do so through teenagers Sam Hodder and Ross Ireland.

Hodder looked in good touch against the Mar-oons’ experienced attack while Ireland provided outstanding support.

The young batsmen added 40 vital runs before Fielding returned to bowl Ireland for seven.

Fielding’s excellent day continued just three balls later when he dismissed Callum Cham-pagne without troubling the scorers.

With his opponents on the ropes, Bennett brought himself into the attack which proved to be decisive as he wrapped up the last three wickets for just five runs.

Hodder was easily the best of Bega’s batsmen, top scoring with 31 but no one else managed to reach double figures.

Fielding starred with 4/9 from his six overs while Bennett (3/5) and Elliott (2/11) impressed.

Defending a small total meant it was crucial that Bega/Angledale made an early breakthrough and they achieved this when Justin Roscoe feathered a catch through to Gareth Law off Jason McWhinn-ey.

Incoming batsman D Allen and Brett Dunham then looked to rebuild the innings.

McWhinney looked sharp from his end but also leaked runs as the scoreboard ticked over.
