THE annual Bega Cup race day was well attended at Sapphire Coast Turf Club on Sunday.
Punters were greeted with perfect weather for the event, which hosted eight races.
Club secretary/manager Les Murphy said he was pleased with the day.
“We had a good turnout of more than 1000 people in fine, warm weather, who were treated to some top-quality racing,” Mr Murphy said.
“The crowd was very well behaved.”
The biggest race, the $27,000 Bega Cheese Bega Cup, was won by Domidor, trained by Moruya’s Steve Stephens.
It was Mr Stephens’ second Bega Cup victory after winning 22 years ago with Canny Garinsky at the old Bega racecourse.
Mr Murphy said it was an impressive run by Domidor.
“It was terrific – a dominant win,” he said.
“It was a real hard, tough and sustained performance and Brimstone kept with him before Domidor dashed away from
the field.”
There were also plenty of highlights off the track on Sunday.
Big prizes were on offer for entrants in Fashions on the Field, which attracted over 40 well-dressed punters.
The huge Carlton Beer Truck proved to be another popular destination for the crowd, providing an excellent view of the course from its upper deck.
