BVSC environmental health co-ordinator Greg O’Donnell said World No Tobacco Day highlighted the need to protect present and future generations from the “devastating” health, social, environmental and economic consequences of tobacco use and exposure.
“Bega Valley Shire Council is one of over 85 councils across NSW that have introduced smoke-free outdoor areas as a result of changing community attitudes towards smoking,” Mr O’Donnell said.
“(It) is a positive step to protect the community from second-hand smoke, promote health messages and support smokers who are trying to quit.”
A recent Cancer Council survey found widespread support for outdoor smoking bans with 92 per cent supporting bans in children’s playgrounds, 85 per cent outside workplace entrances, 80 per cent in sports stadiums and 69 per cent in outdoor dining areas.
“Thirty years ago we still had smoking in shopping centres, hospitals, schools, train stations, cinemas and inside restaurants, but now people recognise that smoke-free areas are good for everyone - particularly children,” Mr O’Donnell said.
“I would like to also promote the lead taken by many smokers who dispose of their cigarette butts responsibly.
“Council has provided waste bins at all sports grounds to aid in proper waste disposal.”
