Big times for Colin and Pat Butler with news of a baby boy, who is to be named Jack, born to Michael and Tracy who live way up north at Elimbah near Caboolture in Queensland, which is a long way away!
Jack is a brother to Georgia who is three years of age and he tipped the scales at 4 pounds 14 ounces.
Bye bye
Marie
Bega just won't be the same without the cheeky and charming face of senior citizen Marie Bond.
Our dear Marie has gone to live at Bimbimbie, Merimbula, where, not surprisingly, she already has lots of friends.
Marie has recovered from a fractured arm which curtailed her movements but not her happy disposition and we will all miss her as she crusades around town.
Of the family, Fred is in New Zealand, Eileen is at Tantawanglo, Margaret is in Bega, Violet at Canberra and Victor at Goulburn.
And we remember fondly Marie's late husband, George, who chatted his way through life.
Charity ball
The Bega RSL Golf Club will host a black-tie charity ball next month to aid Hillgrove House.
The ball will be held at the club on March 20 and the cost is $40 a head which includes supper and dancing to the music of Itchy Feet.
For more information or to book your table, phone Keri on 6492 1585.
Farewell tears
There were a few teary eyes in some Tathra households last weekend as Rebecca Mace and Renee Gill both moved out of home to Canberra to study their degrees at Canberra University.
Other local girls also heading off to various universities are Tara Koellner, Sarah Marshman, Tahlia Stafford and Kath Bannon.
No doubt there were also a few Tathra bachelors who were sad to see the girls go, and at least one of the fathers shed a tear!
Still nursing!
Joan Salter nursed at Hillgrove House, Bega, for 10 years and her husband Noel piloted the school bus from Cobargo while they lived at Quaama.
Now the couple lives in retirement at Moruya.
Son, David and his wife, Sharleen, live at Quaama and their fifth child has arrived.
Joan has been "Nannying", loving every minute of it with little Stephany.
However, the wide open spaces keep calling and although they have seen lots of Australia by motor home, Joan and Noel are off again soon going around the continent, maybe for the next 12 months.
There is no stopping them!
We saw ...
Andy Willis - sprightly of step and ready to fill a coach with tourists.
Kevin (Khaki) Campbell - wending his way home after telling tall tales to mates.
Fred Roberts - who passed "Khaki" at full gallop as he worked up a thirst.
Margaret de Costa - does she ever stop! Serving three customers at the one time.
Trivia - Australia was the country after the USA and Russia to launch a satellite into orbit.
Alma Hyland - who just happened to have her 94th birthday in the usual happy manner.
Don Redman - one time Bega resident now living at Bermagui, where they roll a bowl and spend a retirement life.
Motoring along
Former proprietors of the Princes Motel at Bega, Bimbie and Gwen Martin, passed through Bega by motor home and stayed the night with Peter and Wendy Abraham at Tarraganda.
They are touring Aussie and will soon be in Tasmania after spending five months in Queensland.
Bimbie joined his elder golfing mates for a round while Gwen and the girls went out for lunch.
And just a word about Peter who was indisposed for a while - he is coming on like a hurricane, full of vim and vigour.
Colours a delight
Well known for his interest in gardening and colourful horticultural displays, Barry Owens has drawn our attention to a beautiful garden right next door to their home almost on the corner of Carp and East Streets; dozens of people admire it daily.
Barry says it is a delight to behold and suggests that it will gladden your heart if you stop by and take in its magnificence.
And the bloke who tends it so well is Gerry Fourter - woe betide a weed that dares to show its leaf above the ground.
Kids have fun
Ben and Ali Preo spent school holidays a long way away from home at Mandurah, Western Australia, with their dad in tow showing them a good time.
They had a fantastic time frolicking and sightseeing with their cousins, but both agree there is no place like home in the Bega Valley.
Berlioz and Shakespeare
The Sapphire Coast branch of the Alliance FranÁaise will host a musical evening with a difference when Jean Poncet, cultural counsellor with the French Embassy, will give a lecture, in English, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of the French composer Hector Berlioz.
Entitled "Berlioz, Shakespeare and the Romantic Movement", the talk will be illustrated with musical excerpts and a wide selection of posters, covering many aspects of the great composer's life and works.
Bookings, at $15 each, are essential for this event which will be held on Friday, March 12, in the Sapphire Room of the Merimbula Bowling Club.
A light supper will be served from 6.30pm, with drinks at club prices, and tickets will be available from the Merimbula Bookshop and Magpie Music, Bega.
