Reconciliation gardeners

19 Apr, 2002 09:18 AM
MEMBERS of the south-east NSW branch of the Australian Plant Society have helped landscaped the Bega Valley Shire Council's Reconciliation Garden.

The garden, outside council's administration centre in Zingel Place, is home to a special plaque commemorating council's Memorandum of Understanding with the shire's Aboriginal people and Native Title holders.

Branch members, assisted by council staff, planted native shrubs in the gardens around the plaque earlier this month.

Council's manager of urban design and reserve planning, Mr Mark Canaider, thanked branch members for their assistance and said their efforts typified the community's willingness to participate.

He said local botanist Ms Jackie Miles deserved special thanks for helping to co-ordinate the project.

Mr Canaider said the use of native plants "supported" the plaque but also complemented the landscaping carried out by council staff in the car park at the rear of the administration centre last year.

Besides the Memorandum of Understanding plaque, the Reconciliation Garden eventually will contain as many as 20 Aboriginal totem posts.

Two of the posts are already in place.
