Pony club’s ride is back on

19 Mar, 2010 02:19 PM
CONFUSION remains over whether the Bega Pony Club’s annual street march will go ahead, according to committee member Gerry Tarlinton.

Mr Tarlinton said he had received huge support from the RTA and local police, but was somewhat disappointed he hadn’t heard from Bega Valley Shire Council after writing an open letter regarding the event and placing several phone calls.

Along with an application to stage the event, the letter gave the names and contact numbers of both the RTA and the police and asked for early attention to the matter.

“The good news from my point of view is that it’s fantastic that we have been given great support from the RTA and the local police,” he said.

“We didn’t chase them up; they came to us to give support.

“Peter Bache from the RTA came to my workplace and told me that ‘it’s something that we wanted to happen and something that should happen; we will lend our support’.

“The following morning sergeant Dale Abbott from the police rang me to say they will run it and the parade will go ahead.”

According to council general manager Peter Tegart, the application must be approved by council’s traffic committee, but the person responsible was on leave.

“However, he returns on Monday and as long as there is evidence that the RTA and police have signed off on the event, there should be no trouble,” Mr Tegart said.

Bega Police Inspector Jason Edmunds said that he and Sgt Abbott were pleased to help out.

“But I would ask any group that is planning a similar activity to contact the police at the first opportunity and see what we can do to help, because we might be able to save a lot of time and trouble and heartache,” he said.
