ONCE again a small group of Bega High School students gave up a week of their holidays to be immersed in 'concentrated music' at the 32nd Annual Border Music Camp at Albury from July 2-8.
About 250 students from NSW, Victoria and Queensland attended the six days of intensive music sessions at the Scotts School, Albury.
The audience at the two public concerts on the Friday night (elective groups) and Saturday night (symphony orchestra, wind and string ensembles) were treated to an extraordinary display of musical skills.
As in previous years, the quality of both concerts was outstanding and the audience could well be forgiven for thinking they were actually attending the Sydney or Melbourne Symphony Orchestras, both of which kindly provide tutors for the camp.
Students from Bega High who attended were: Year 12 - Amy Turnbull (violin); Year 11 - Naomi Deneve (violin), Leif Helland (viola), Jack Hobbs (cello); Year 10 - Sigrid Helland (violin), Vera Planert (violin); Year 9 - Eleanor Hobbs (flute), Suzannah Walker (cello).
Two of our Bega High School contingent, Jack Hobbs and Sigrid Helland, were both nominated by the staff for one of the seven awards given out at the camp - for excellence in the Davis Symphony Orchestra.
Sigrid was also awarded the prestigious Marcel Leiber Memorial Award for the most outstanding student across all areas of the camp.
This is the highest honour given at the camp.
