High School work continues

03 Jul, 2009 09:38 AM
THE third and final stage of the redevelopment of Bega High School will be finished for First Term 2010.

The first part of Stage Three is apparent to anyone passing the Upper Street side of the school.

The administration block is being refurbished and extended with a disabled access to a new front door on the front corner of the school’s office block.

The old stairs for the former entrance are now being demolished and a large tree has been cut down for the disabled access.

The former staff common room and the mathematics rooms will also be refurbished.

When this work is completed, Project Co-ordination, the firm doing the work, will start on building two all-weather playing courts on the High Street side of the school and resurfacing the bus route at High Street.

The next part of the project will probably cause the most disturbance to the usual running of the school when the visual arts classrooms on the lower floor of the main building will be refurbished and upgraded as will the staff rooms on the second floor.

The L block science building will gain a multi-media lab and the portables on the side of the oval will be removed.

There will be improved access to the entrance of the special needs block and the computing and communications infrastructure at the school will be upgraded.

While the Stage One work is completed the administration block has been moved to a portable on a basketball court.

When the executive and office staff move back to the new building, that playing court will be resurfaced.

The redevelopment of the school started in 2001 after years of problems caused by an increase of students from 500 or 600 to well over 1000.

When the NSW Government finally agreed to the redevelopment and plans were put before the Bega Valley Shire Council, there was considerable controversy over the closing of High Street between Auckland Street and Eden Street.

When it was resolved that the street be closed for Stage One which included the gymnasium and the canteen, the planners had to check as to whether there were any graves left on the site of the proposed new buildings.

The grounds of Bega High School had been the first Bega Cemetery and it was thought not all the graves had been removed to the new cemetery in South Bega.

A few graves were found and plotted and the architects ensured they were not disturbed by the project.

As that area of Bega High School had also been part of the track taken by Aboriginal people coming from Black Range to the river, the planners also had to complete an Aboriginal archaeological assessment.

Stage Two of the reconstruction involved the building of the technology classrooms on the Eden Street side of the school and the refurbishment of the old industrial arts and home economics building.
