Cops out on Cup day

30 Oct, 2009 10:24 AM
LOCAL Melbourne Cup Day race goers are advised there will be a heavy police presence in the district next Tuesday during and after the day’s events at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club.

The race meeting at the Kalaru track will be attended by both plain clothed and uniformed police officers who will target alcohol related crime and anti-social behaviour.

“Police from Bega, Merimbula and as far north as Narooma will be at the race meeting on Tuesday,” Bega Police sergeant Justin Marks said.

“So those people who intend going to the races just to cause trouble or are under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be arrested and any relevant offences will be put before the court.

“After the race and throughout the night there will be a heavy presence of police in Tathra, Bega, Merimbula and surrounds.”

Sgt Marks said the highway patrol will also be out in force to ensure our local roads are safe for motorists.

“If you are going to drive to the event, then be sure not to drink.

“People may drive to the races, initially intending not to drink, but often end up doing so resulting in an extremely high incidence of driving after drinking at these events.”

In other police news investigations are continuing into a spate of break-ins at mainly commercial premises in Bega.

Police were called to an accident involving a truck on top of Brown Mountain on Tuesday evening.

The accident occurred when the truck lost it brakes coming down the mountain.

No one was injured.
