Boost for mentoring programs

16 Apr, 2004 10:17 AM
THE Bega Valley Mentoring Network will receive Federal Government funding to give the young people in the Bega Valley access to mentoring programs.

Bega Valley Mentoring Network is a partnership between Sapphire Community Centre, the Men's Health and Wellbeing Association and Auswide projects.

"The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Larry Anthony, has approved $95,192 funding for the Bega Valley Community Mentoring Project under the Australian Government's Mentor Marketplace Program," The Member for Eden-Monaro, Mr Gary Nairn, said.

"The Mentor Marketplace is part of the Australian Government's commitment to young people and ensuring they have the support they need to make a smooth transition to adulthood, particularly from school to further education, training or work.

"The Australian Government has developed the Mentor Marketplace Program to help local organisations build on the proven effectiveness of mentoring.

"The program has increased mentoring opportunities for young people aged between 12 and 25 years, particularly those at greatest risk of disconnection from their families, community, education and work.

"Mentoring programs are important for young people who need a role model.

"Family breakdown and a raft of other circumstances can result in young people growing up without a person in their lives who they can turn to for guidance and advice.

"With the support of a trusted mentor through the Mentor Marketplace Program, many young Australians will have the opportunity to develop to their full potential."
