End of an Era
The Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart (Josephites) arrived in Bega in 1926 taking over the Bega Convent from the Sisters of Charity. There were between 150 to 160 pupils at the school at that time and catered for students through Primary to Intermediate. The Secondary school closed in 1975. Later years saw the numbers grow to around 240 in the Primary School. Boarders were taken until 1975, and the music centre remained until 1975. Many people in Bega have fond memories of their music lessons with the Sisters.
There are many anecdotes in parish records, which acknowledge the great work that the Sisters have done over their 75 years in the parish. Many speak of their humility, sacrifice, humour, compassion and great faith. Some will be remembered as very strict but fair. One boarder remembered “Who, as a boarder, will ever forget the Rosary train? We always knew it was safe to get into mischief the moment the nuns lining up to go to chapel by the noise of the Rosary beads”.
Parishioners are sad to farewell the Josephites, especially the present Sisters - Sister Yvonne McGettigan and Sister Catherine Histon. Sister Yvonne has been with here for 16 years teaching in the Infants section of St. Patrick’s School. Sister Catherine has been the Pastoral Associate in the Parish for seven years. The whole Parish wishes them well for the future.
Everyone is invited to attend a farewell Mass at 6.00pm on Friday November 23 followed by a dinner at the Bega RSL at 7.30pm. Tickets are $20 each and can be obtained from John Rheinberger 64921628, Marea Russell 64921311 or Meg Doherty at Jewellery For You, Carp St, Bega. You can also contact Gwen at the School or Mary at the Presbytery.

Delayed trip for Emma
The uncertain world situation following the September 11 disaster has had widespread indirect results. Among the victims are the hundreds of Australian Lions Clubs’ Youth Exchangees whose end of year overseas trips have been cancelled.
One of these is Emma Keft of Kalaru who was sponsored by the Tathra Lions Club and who was about to fulfil a long held ambition to live with Lions Club families in England and Scandinavia. Despite her obvious disappointment, Emma has accepted the cancellation philosophically and is concentrating on her HSC. She hopes to start university studies early next year and make her dream trip at the end of 2002, again supported by the Tathra Lions Club. The Club wishes her great success in her exams and a happy, rewarding year at university.
Emma wishes to thank her mother and friends who so generously supported her in so many ways, including the raffle, the prize for which was donated by Ian Sapsford of Bega Betta Electrical.
