Andy calls it a day

06 Nov, 2009 01:46 PM
AFTER 10 years as event organiser of the Bega Canteen Bandanna Bike Ride, Andy Willis has decided to step down from the role.

Mr Willis made the announcement at the presentation after the event last Friday afternoon.

“It was an extremely difficult decision to make given the event means so much and has been such a big part of my life,” he said.

“But after consultation and support from Canteen it was one that I felt was timely.”

During what was an emotional farewell speech Mr Willis thanked daughter Brooke and wife Narelle for making the 10th year extra special by riding on the road with him.

“Special thanks to the Bega Police and the SES for their huge contribution in making sure the event ran safely,” Mr Willis said.

Mr Willis said he also thanked all local high schools, sponsors and the support vehicle drivers.

“I advise the event structure and procedures are now well and truly refined and documented and I hope that maybe someone else may be interested in taking it on,” he said.

At the conclusion of the presentation, close friend Bob Britten made a speech on behalf of the community.

A member of the Tools on Tour, a group of mates who are training to ride overseas next year and made their Bandanna Bike Ride debut, Mr Britten complimented Mr Willis on his commitment to starting things off and building them up for all to benefit.

Since the ride began 10 years ago, $150,000 has been raised through the event.

Mr Britten said his speech last Friday was impromptu.

“Andy had just made his thankyou speech and it didn’t feel right to just finish on that note,” he said.

“I felt compelled as a friend to acknowledge Andy.

“I acknowledged Andy’s commitment to the community and he has basically single-handedly organised the event.

“Once he gets interested in something, Andy is a natural born leader.”

Mr Britten said he hoped the event will continue to thrive and was pleased with how it has grown so far.

“At the moment I hope the Canteen Bandanna Bike Ride will get picked up next year,” he said.

“I didn’t really think it would get to this stage originally but having said that, I’ve come to recognise Andy’s organisational skills and ability to help things grow.”
