06 Aug 10 | INDIGENOUS residents of Bega are encouraged to apply for Commonwealth Bank’s Indigenous School Based Traineeship program, which is now open for applications. The traineeship will begin in December 2010 at the Bega branch of the Commonwealth Bank. Applications close on August 31.
06 Aug 10 | THE local fire brigade’s emergency response capacity across the South Coast and Snow Mountains region has been boosted with the delivery of a specialist hazardous materials (HAZMAT) vehicle to Bega Fire Station.
06 Aug 10 | BEGA Police and FSC Rural Fire Service have issued an appeal to the public for information in relation to a series of arson attacks that have occurred on property in Max Slater Drive, south of Bega. 06 Aug 10 | IN A cheeky turning of the tables, Eden timber industry workers “chained” themselves to, and parked in, the Chipbusters mobile billboard parked outside Merimbula’s Lakeview Hotel on Sunday. South East Fibre Exports general manager Peter Mitchell and his colleague Peter Rutherford, “blockaded” the anti-woodchip mobile billboard being driven and parked around parts of the Eden-Monaro electorate by Chipbusters’ Noel Plumb and driver John Perkins.
Preschool set to grow
06 Aug 10 | A GRANT of $150,000 received by the Bega Preschool is “just the thing” needed for it to grow, according to director Shayne Dransfield. Granted under the NSW Government’s Preschool Growth program, the money will be used to upgrade and update the 40-year-old facility.
03 Aug 10 | BERYL Harris’s second home is the Bega District Hospital where she has been volunteering for so many years she can’t remember. She was born and bred in Bermagui in a family of 10: seven boys and three girls and came to Bega when she was training as a nurse.
03 Aug 10 | BEGA Valley Shire Council plans to celebrate Local Government Week by offering a Big Day Out with council tomorrow. There will be a range of activities including a bus tour of some of Council’s facilities, a display of major development plans and an opportunity to chat informally with the Mayor and Councillors.
03 Aug 10 | SIGNS of frustration and angst among residents of the Wolumla area were more than evident at last week’s town meeting on the proposed Central Waste Facility. The meeting, chaired by Vince Phillips, was attended by more than 80 people and most were quite vocal.

03 Aug 10 | RICKY’S Place, the initiative for homeless and disadvantaged people located at St John’s Anglican Church in Bega, has benefitted from a $6000 grant from Wool-worths. As well, the local Woolies store will donate excess fresh food that has not sold to the Ricky’s Place program.

30 Jul 10 | THE success of two projects aimed protecting and rehabilitating coastal environments and critical aquatic habitats on the South Coast was celebrated at Beares Beach, Bermagui on Wednesday.
30 Jul 10 | COMPENSATION claims by up to 25 Far South Coast women who were allegedly mutilated by former Pambula doctor Graeme Reeves could be settled within the next two months, the lawyer representing them said. Keddies director Scott Roulstone said that he expected that these cases “should be able to be resolved within a couple of months”.

30 Jul 10 | VOTERS shouldn’t believe the result of a poll published earlier this week, according to Member for Eden-Monaro Mike Kelly. The poll in Monday’s The Canberra Times indicated that Mr Kelly had opened up a winning gap on his Liberal opponent David Gazard Conducted by Patterson Market Research, the survey showed that Mr Kelly had a primary vote of 53 per cent against Mr Gazard’s 36 per cent.
27 Jul 10 | TATHRA trailed until the final few seconds but were able to secure victory over Bega Roosters on Saturday evening. Fittingly, the first game under lights at Bega Recreation Ground in years was a thriller, with the under-strength Eagles scraping home 16-12.
27 Jul 10 | THE Bega Chamber of Commerce held its annual general meeting last week with a new executive elected. Led again by president Robert Hayson, the executive is: Evan Davies, Phil McDonald, Mal Barnes, Chris Maxted, John Watkin, Chris Dwyer, Cathie Benzie, Linda Weedon, Beth Hart and Geoff Morrisey.
27 Jul 10 | COMMUNITY concerns have been partially reflected in a decision on traffic in Gowing Lane. After some confusion about the actual recommendation from its traffic committee, Bega Valley Shire Council chose to respond to community angst about traffic movement in the lane that runs between the back of Fletchers Fotographics and Woolworths.
27 Jul 10 | LIBERAL candidate for Eden-Monaro David Gazard has called for open and independent costing of the Bega bypass. Campaigning in Bega last week with Shadow Minister for Resources and Energy Ian Macfar-lane, Mr Gazard said the community was entitled to know all the details about the $85 million that was announced last Thursday. “I am totally in favour of the bypass and support it fully,” he said.
27 Jul 10 | THE Southern Women’s Group Inc - Women’s Resource Centre was successful in receiving funding from Legal Aid NSW Cooperative’s Legal Service Delivery (CLSD) program to deliver professional development training to local service staff in the Bega Valley.
