12 Mar 10 | STUDENTS and teachers at Bega High School (BHS) are getting ready to participate in National Ride to School Day. A group will ride from Tathra to Bega before school next Wednesday morning. Run by the Cycling Promotion Fund, the aim of the event is to find a low cost and easy way to get children more active. BHS teacher Vince Weafer said he was looking forward to the event.
12 Mar 10 | CONSERVATION groups have appealed to the Premier Kristina Keneally to intervene in the battle over the future of the last koala colony in the South East Forests in a remote area near Bega.
12 Mar 10 | OYSTER farmers at Wapengo Lake remain unconvinced that logging of the Wapengo catchment will not adversely affect their industry. Logging in Mumbulla State Forest, including an area of the Wapengo catchment, is scheduled to begin this month.
12 Mar 10 | LIVE It Now is the theme for this year’s annual youth exhibition held in conjunction with National Youth Week showcasing the talents of local young emerging artists 12-24 years old. The exhibition will open at 5pm today at the Spiral Gallery and will be on display until Wednesday, April 1. Spiral Gallery is open 10-4pm Mondays to Fridays and Saturday 10-1pm.
12 Mar 10 | THE name of the new public school in Bega will be announced at the end of the month. Bega West Public School and Bega Primary (Public) School will be amalgamated in 2012 and meetings are being held to discuss the name of the new school, its uniform and all aspects of the amalgamation. At a meeting on Monday night five names were put forward by representatives from both schools.
Koalas can be saved
12 Mar 10 | THE chief executive officer of the Australian Koala Foundation has called for detailed mapping of the Bega Valley. In the region to campaign against logging and its threat to the koala, Deborah Tabart – also known as The Koala Woman - believes mapping is essential to better understand the biodiversity of the area, particularly forests, and consequently provide better knowledge of how to protect koalas.
05 Mar 10 | CONSERVATION groups claim that the NSW Department of Environment (DoE) was dooming the last remaining koala colony in the South East Forests by caving in to the NSW logging agency, State Forests. A spokesperson for the group said “DoE has effectively sold out on the survival of the last koalas in the South East Forests as it tries to negotiate with State Forests on a grossly unequal basis”.
05 Mar 10 | OVER 400 Bermagui residents have signed a petition sent to Federal Member Mike Kelly, “to stop the destruction of the northern entrance to Bermagui”. Forests NSW has said it will log in the area known as the “cathedral of trees” which is loved and admired by tourists and locals alike as they drive into town.
05 Mar 10 | PARVOVIRUS is sweeping across NSW but the disease hasn’t been too prominent in the Bega Valley, according to Bega and Cobargo Veterinary Hospitals owner Dr Jane Woolacott. The virus is particularly dangerous to young unvaccinated puppies and causes vomiting and profuse diarrhoea, leading to dehydration.
05 Mar 10 | ALTHOUGH the tremendous soaking that the Bega Valley has had recently has been good, it doesn’t come without introducing the potential for some adverse animal health impacts, Ian Lugton from the South East Livestock Health and Pest Authority has warned.
Gold, gold, gold
05 Mar 10 | ONCE again, Tathra Oysters has been successful at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show. The local company has won medals before, but this year the recognition came under duress. “The rain and flooding caused us huge problems and the win was really against the odds,” owner Gary Rodely said.
26 Feb 10 | THE figures released this week by the government on times for development applications to be processed are wrong, according to council staff. Group manager planning and environment Andrew Woodley said: “While the government can only go on what is in its system, we have found many discrepancies in the figures.”
26 Feb 10 | SOUTH East Arts Region (SEAR) is looking forward to an exciting 2010, thanks to a very generous donation from a local resident. John Handley from Wyndham has supported SEAR with $81,000 through the Australia Cultural Fund.
26 Feb 10 | WHILE Bega Valley Shire has been declared a natural disaster zone by the State Government, there could still be problems with financing the repairs after the flood. Council’s group manager infrastructure, waste and water Wayne Sartori said that while council expected significant funding to come from government, there are certain things that may not be covered.
26 Feb 10 | THE proposed Bega Valley Shire Council draft smoking policy will go to the community for comment, despite rigorous discussion at council’s meeting on Tuesday. According to council’s Jeff Tipping, a “blanket approach” was taken when developing the policy, after which it might be adjusted depending on the comments received after it had been displayed.
Big flood, big damage
26 Feb 10 | THE bill from the recent damage caused by flooding throughout the Bega Valley Shire has reached well over $3 million and is rising. Council’s group manager infrastructure, waste and water Wayne Sartori said this week the list of repairs will take quite some time to complete.
23 Feb 10 | REVELATIONS that the Federal Government is considering giving public hospitals more autonomy when it comes to decision-making would be a slap in the face to the State Government, according to Member for Bega Andrew Constance. Mr Constance said the government has steadfastly resisted moves to give hospital general managers more power.
23 Feb 10 | BEGA Police officers are very pleased with the way most people conducted themselves at the Far South Coast National show. The strong police presence, including officers from Batemans Bay, Queanbeyan and the dog squad, ensured only a handful of relatively minor incidences occurred at the show and in town over the three days.
23 Feb 10 | BEGA Valley Shire Council staff recently donated $500 to the Bega squad of the Volunteer Rescue Association to buy a Hi-Ab lifter for the squad’s lighting plant. VRA captain, Phil Dutton, said the big banks of lights were heavy and unwieldy so the lifter was needed for the safety of squad members.
23 Feb 10 | RESIDENTS living in and visiting the Bega Valley Shire are advised to take precautions against mosquito bites, due to the risk of contracting the Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses.
